Helping a client get dressed

Let the client choose the outfit and do what they can. For a weak or painful side: that side goes INTO clothing first when dressing, and comes OUT first when undressing.

  1. 1Offer choices โ€” 'the blue or the gray sweater?' keeps the client in charge with less overwhelm.
  2. 2Weak side IN first when dressing; strong side OUT first when undressing. Support (don't pull) the weak limb.
  3. 3Seat the client for lower-body dressing when balance is poor; never let them stand on one leg holding your shoulder.
  4. 4Adaptive tricks: front-opening clothes, one size up, slip-on shoes with non-slip soles, button hooks if in the plan.
  5. 5Watch skin as you dress: check pressure points and skin folds; make sure nothing is bunched under the body.
  6. 6Take your time โ€” rushing turns dressing into a fight, especially with dementia. Same order every day helps.
