Range-of-motion (ROM) exercises

Do ROM exercises only as the care plan directs: move each joint slowly through its comfortable range, support the limb above and below the joint, and stop at pain โ€” never force or bounce.

  1. 1Check the care plan first: which joints, how many repetitions, active (client moves) or passive (you move) โ€” this is prescribed, not improvised.
  2. 2Support above and below the joint you're moving; move slowly and smoothly.
  3. 3Go to the point of resistance or mild stretch, never past pain โ€” pain means stop and note it.
  4. 4Typical pattern: each motion 3โ€“5 times, both sides, during a natural moment like after the bath.
  5. 5Encourage active motion whenever possible โ€” what the client does themselves maintains more strength.
  6. 6Report: new pain, new stiffness, swelling, or a joint that suddenly moves less than usual.
