Caring for a client after a stroke
Support the weak side without pulling on it, give extra time for speech and tasks, and know the F.A.S.T. signs of a NEW stroke โ face drooping, arm weakness, speech trouble โ which mean call 911 immediately.
- 1New stroke signs = 911 now: sudden face droop, one-sided arm or leg weakness, slurred or lost speech, sudden severe headache, sudden vision trouble. Note the time symptoms started โ EMS will ask.
- 2Approach and place items on the client's stronger side if they neglect one side; remind them gently to check their weak side.
- 3Never pull on a weak arm during transfers or dressing โ it can injure the shoulder. Support the joint from underneath.
- 4Speech problems (aphasia) don't mean reduced intelligence: speak normally, give time, offer yes/no options, never finish sentences uninvited.
- 5Watch swallowing โ stroke often causes dysphagia (see the swallowing guide); follow diet texture orders exactly.
- 6Report: new weakness, more falls, mood changes (post-stroke depression is common), skin issues on the weak side.
For dressing: weak side goes IN first when putting clothes on, strong side comes OUT first when taking them off.
